I found both the anime and the movie very entertaining, and i recommend both. And this way, you're not watching the exact same thing. But what movie doesn't? Especially for anime, some things would look a little weird without changing it while doing the live action. Yes, the movie definitely changed some things from the anime. For someone like me, who only prefers romance dramas, i fell in love with this!

The future of mankind is at the mercy of this fierce battle between the two brains. With L's expertise, the police are able to tighten the investigative screws over these cases, but Light, also cleverly manipulating the notebook of death, tosses and shakes the investigation. "L" is an eccentric genius who has successfully solved many cases in the past that were deemed unsolvable.
